Frequently Asked Questions about GORE® ACUSEAL Cardiovascular Patch
Do I need to prep the patch before using?
Generally patches are stored in the areas where the temperature is cool and thus may stiffen up. To improve handling, allow the patch to warm up (i.e. soaked in warm saline or water), it will soften and be easier to contour.
Does the GORE® ACUSEAL Cardiovascular Patch bleed less than the competition?
Surgeons have reported that bleeding times are equivalent if not better than bovine collagen coated/sealed DACRON® material.
Due to the patch construction, are the strength properties compromised?
No. In fact, the addition of the dense middle layer actually increases the suture retention by approximately 10%.
If the bleeding is equivalent, then why should I use it?
The properties of ePTFE are known to be less thrombogenic than collagen coated/sealed Dacron® material. Additionally, recently published studies indicate a lower rate of restenosis with GORE ePTFE than with sealed Dacron® material.
What is the clinical experience of this patch?
To date we have had over 15,000 implantations to include both vascular and pediatric cardiac reconstructions.
What makes the GORE® ACUSEAL Cardiovascular Patch the preferred product for vascular patching applications?
Increased sealing of suture holes to minimize bleeding. This is achieved by including a middle layer of a proprietary thermoplastic fluoropolymer that has elastic properties.
